Matt Mason Presented with IEEE Robotics Award

Berkshire Grey’s Chief Scientist Recognized for Seminal Contributions in Robotics

In October of 2018, Berkshire Grey’s Chief Scientist, Matt Mason, was presented with the prestigious IEEE Robotics and Automation Award at the 2018 IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems in Madrid, Spain.  The award was established in 2002 to honor game-changing contributions to the field of robotics and automation.  The honor is awarded annually to an individual or team of up to 3 people that has impacted the science and industry of robotics in a fundamental way.  The list of recipients is a who’s-who and hall-of-fame of historical figures in robotics.

The awards committee cited Matt, “for scientific and educational contributions to the mechanics of manipulation enabling real-world robot autonomy, and for leadership in robotics.”  Matt is often acknowledged as one of the world’s leading authorities on robotic manipulation having researched and written more on this topic than pretty much anyone in the world.

At Berkshire Grey, Matt applies his legendary background to research and development efforts that the Berkshire Grey engineering teams turn into real-world practical technology.  That work enables intelligent robotic systems to automate tasks never before performed by machines in commercial settings.

On a personal note, Matt is one of the most down-to-earth and engaging people you will ever meet.  He is brilliant and some would say a luminary in the field of robotics, but he is also a team player, a collaborator, a mentor, and a friend.  All of us at Berkshire Grey are proud of our association with Matt and count ourselves lucky to know him on a personal level.

Congratulations Dr. Mason you’ve definitely earned it.
